Student Support

Te tautoko a nga akonga

Margaret Wheeler – Head of Guidance

I lead a diverse, enthusiastic team of two part-time counsellors, all three of us are members of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors, and five trainee counsellors on placement for the year. Referrals come from staff, students, parents, and community agencies seeking support for students with a wide range of concerns including mild to moderate mental health problems, a range of disabilities, complex family and personal issues, ongoing relationship, learning and other difficulties. Our role is to provide  a confidential counselling service to students and their families, remove barriers to learning, manage risk, identify and prevent problems from escalating and empower students to manage themselves more effectively in their lives. We bring a wide range of counselling experience, training and skills to our work. We have good community networks and can assist with liaison, access and referral to community and specialist mental health agencies when required.

Toby Hilton – Health Nurse

I have always had a passion for working with young people. While I trained to be a nurse, I was a youth worker and local sports coach supporting the young people in my community. When I qualified as a Registered Nurse, I wasn’t really sure how to best support young people in a Health Professional role. After working in a couple of different nursing jobs, I found out about school nursing and since then I haven’t turned back. I really enjoy working with young people in the high school setting, providing private, confidential and holistic care to the student population. It’s amazing to be a part of their journey and to help them recognise their own strengths and potential.
