Our Senior A Boys Basketball Squad has been training since March. They had their first preseason tournament over the weekend, coming out unbeaten in all of their games.

Our senior basketball squad was left with many gaps after losing integral senior players and coaches after the 2018 season.  Due to this, there were many unknowns at the start of 2019, however, we were lucky enough to have David Langrell a well-known basketball coach step in and get involved with Horomaka basketball.  Dave has a strong network within the basketball community and it wasn’t long before we had an internationally experienced coach, Eric Rees, and an enthusiastic Canterbury Basketballer and assistant coach, Hamish Hobbs step in to coach our senior boys basketball team.

A squad of 16 boys were named at the start of this month and there were over 20 boys at morning training sessions.

This new squad competed in their first preseason competition and in their first games playing together.  They managed to come out of the tournament unbeaten, competing against Riccarton High School, Lincoln High School and Hornby High School.

A promising and exciting season is ahead for this team as they have just been named in the Thomson Trophy weekly competition in Division 1 for the 2019 season. These games are played on Tuesday nights and I encourage all to get along and support this team when possible.

This Senior Boys ‘A’ Team are aiming to compete strongly at the South Island Championships in September at Greymouth in the hopes of regaining the title which Hillmorton held in 2017.

Good luck to this squad, we look forward to following your success.
