Our School
OUR KURA
Situated on six hectares in south-west Christchurch, about 10 minutes from the city centre close to several sporting and shopping amenities and the Port Hills, Hillmorton High School is a co-educational state school for Years 7–13. We offer a broad curriculum in a caring and connected environment where every student is known as an individual. Our campus includes modern and traditional learning spaces, specialist facilities in the arts, sciences, and technologies, alongside a beautiful whare wānanga, well-resourced library and our guidance and careers centres.
Over the past decade, Hillmorton High School has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once a mid-sized school of around 700 ākonga, we now serve more than 1400, a reflection of the trust and confidence our community places in us. Our modern facilities include Aonga Ake, a 22-classroom middle school building and Te Kōmata o Te Rangi, our new gymnasium with two full-sized courts, classrooms and a strength and conditioning suite. A new Science block is scheduled for completion in 2026 and we will soon plan the building of a new Arts block to house Visual Arts, Music, Dance, and Drama, continuing our investment in high-quality learning spaces.
Our ākonga come from a diverse range of socio-economic, cultural, and learning backgrounds, most living within five to ten kilometres of the school. Our Upland Unit provides tailored education and care for students with high and very high needs under the Ongoing Resource Scheme (ORS), and since 2015, our partnership with Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand has enriched our kura with the integration of deaf culture and language.
Hillmorton’s student body along with our international students reflects the wider social fabric of Aotearoa, preparing our young people to thrive in a diverse and global society. Inclusion and belonging are at the heart of our school, and we are proud of the strong relationships that underpin all we do.
With our growth has come a renewed sense of identity. We recently rebranded adopting a new logo, new uniform and refreshed visual presence that better reflects who we are today: a dynamic, diverse, and future-focused learning community. Our journey is grounded in strong values and a whakataukī that we are deeply committed to, guiding our culture, shaping our relationships, and anchoring us through change.
Our school is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment, encouraging students to reach their full potential in academics, sports, and cultural activities.
