Kia ora koutou,

The year has started well with students and staff settling into the new Middle School building, Aonga Ake.

Please rememberthat all visitors, including parents, must always sign in at the main school office. This is a legal Health & Safety requirement.

Ka Ora Ka Ako – Healthy School Lunches

  • It has been good to see so many students trying what, for some, is ‘new food’. We remain very grateful for being included in this programme and it’s great to see students having ‘seconds’ or even ‘thirds’!

  • The organisation for getting over 1000 lunches out is huge and we are hopeful that things will now run smoothly with lunches being delivered to whānau groups including those with specific dietary requirements

  • We are giving daily feedback to the provider and they are currently altering the menu

After four weeks we will be asking for parental and whānau feedback.

Kai and Korero (Meet the Teacher Evening)

  • We warmly invite you to our first parent evening to be held on Tuesday 23 February at 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm. You will be able to look through Aonga Ake, learn how to use the parent portal, meet our caring staff and share kai with your whānau

COVID-19 – Reminders

  • While we are in a very fortunate position to have no community cases of COVID-19 in Canterbury, we can’t take anything for granted. As we enjoy the freedoms at Alert Level 1, we also all need to be ready in case COVID-19 or one of the new emerging variants appears in our community

  • Our staff are well prepared to teach your child/children remotely at short notice in the event something unexpected happens

Maintaining good hygiene

  • Please continue to encourage your child/children to keep up good hand washing practices, using soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and drying thoroughly. Cough and sneeze into their elbow and keep surfaces clean

If your child is sick please keep them at home and email absences@hillmorton.school.nz or call 03 3385 119

What to do if your child does not have a Chromebook at school?

  • If a student does not have a Chromebook, they can buy a school used one for $30 from the school. Please note we have limited supply. The charge will be added to the student’s account and can be paid off over time. Details on how to action this are below

  • If a student doesn’t have a Chromebook for a while (getting repaired, ordered a new charger etc.), they can get a Yellow card from the Head of Year and each day, take this yellow card to the library where they can be issued with a Chromebook. Student’s are required to collect them before 9am and drop off at 3pm every day until their Chromebook is back in use

  • If a student doesn’t have a Chromebook for the day because they left it at home or it is out of battery, they will simply need to work on paper or in their books

$30 Chromebooks

We still have some Chromebooks that we can pass onto you for $30. These are only available to students who do not have access to a Chromebook at school. If you would like to purchase one, please simply email admin@hillmorton.school.nz and state your child’s name and year level. We will then get a Chromebook to the student within a day or two and charge their account with $30 that can be paid off over time

Google/ School Management of Student Owned Chromebooks

We have decided as a school that we will only manage Chromebooks that are owned by the school. This means that if your child has a Chromebook you have purchased for them, there will be no restrictions on the use of different accounts etc. when they are at home.

When onsite at school, Chromebooks will only be able to be used in line with our school BYOD policy agreement and the schools internet filtering systems. These will protect student devices and ensure they are used appropriately for learning. We will send instructions shortly of how to take your child’s device off of our Google Management System

Swimming Sports – Friday 19 February – 8.45 am to 2.30 pm

Students are expected to meet at Halswell Pool with all appropriate non-uniform clothing in their house colours with their togs, towel, sunhat, water and to bring their own lunch. It is expected that students will make their own way home.

Parents and whanau are welcome to attend, we would love to see you there!

School Car Park

  • We ask that students are dropped off in the loading zone on Tankerville Road, unless you have an appointment we ask that you do not drive into the school ground

Mobile Phones

  • A reminder that students are to have their mobile phones off and in their bags from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm each day.

Thank you for your help encouraging this.
