The Hillmorton Environment Committee went on a hui to the beautiful Koukourarata – Port Levy.

The school has an Environment Committee which can assemble for school or community initiatives.  Last week they went to Koukourarata to stay at the marae and tend to the native plants of which we have helped cultivate over the years.

We weeded around some of the younger plants to give them space to grow unimpeded.

The students had recently studied up on the birds we would find and then completed the NZ Bird Survey for 2018.  There were 29 bird species spotted during the hui.

Finally the students did a beach clean from one end to the other and gathered 30 kilograms of rubbish, most of which was broken glass.

We would like to give a huge thanks to the Koukourarata Marae, Sharnecho Crofts, Marion Crofts, Annie Ramsden and the Horomaka staff that made it possible.
