About Hillmorton
Naumai, haere mai ki Te Kura Tuarua o Horomaka. Welcome to Hillmorton High School.
Standing at the pinnacle in the sky (Te Kōmata o Te Rangi) on Te Heru o Kahukura, Sugar Loaf at the top of the Port Hills, we can see Whakaraupo Lyttleton Harbour, with its blues and teals and beyond to the small island named Horomaka, close to the shore near Koukourata (Port Levy).
Horomaka also refers to all of the Banks Peninsula area and a native plant named Tmesipteris horomaka which is a beautiful bright green in colour.
We look down from Ngā Kohatu Whakarakaraka o Tamatea Pōkai Whenua, the Port Hills and along Ōtumatua, a spur that divides Hoon Hay Valley from Kennedy’s Bush.
We can see Waimōkihi the upper section of Ōpāwaho (The Heathcote River) which runs through Spreydon, quite close to the school.
We look down, out past Halswell to the settled cultivated plains of Canterbury.
