PASIFIKA AWARD

Congratulations to Cameron Hoare! We are very proud of Cameron.

Six outstanding young Pacific New Zealanders were recognised in Wellington, August 10 at the Prime Minister’s Pacific Youth Awards, an initiative which highlights the achievements and potential of future leaders.

Prime Minister John Key says the winners embody the community spirit and determination all New Zealanders admire.
“Today’s winners are high achievers in their fields and are inspirational to their peers. They have made enormous contributions to their schools and communities, and have shone academically.
“Up and down the country, our young people are doing great things, and those in the Pacific community are no exception. It’s vital all young New Zealanders are encouraged to realise their potential if they are going to be successful in their chosen fields.”

Cameron was awarded the Air New Zealand Innovation Award.
In 2010, Cameron was working each Friday as part of his Gateway Placement at Air New Zealand. This year, he has worked at Pacific Airway Services. The Gateway Programme is funded by the TEC and allows students to have work placements as part of their school programme.

We wish Cameron all the very best as he leaves school at the end of this year and takes up his scholarship.

GIRLS ROCK!

Hera with Hillmorton students

Hillmorton music students continue to enjoy really positive music mentoring experiences that are the envy of many.

Run in conjunction with the New Zealnd Music Commission, Hillmorton students in recent years have enjoyed workshops with Jason Kerrison from Op Shop and then, they were fortunate to have time with Moana Maniopoto who shared her experiences about song writing and the music industry in New Zealand.

Most recently, two of our budding songstresses had the opportunity to attend a work shop with NZ artists Anna Coddington, Julia Deans from Fur Patrol and Hera. This opportunity to again work with ‘real life’ performers is really exciting.

Making Waves

The Dragon Boating Team took to the water in a Wellington regatta, and then competed at Lake Pegasus and won the South Island Mixed Final for the second year running.

STAGE CHALLENGE SUCCESS

BALLET

CONGRATULATIONS to all students in STAGE CHALLENGE.

Hillmorton was placed third overall and won a number of other awards on the night.

COMMUNITY CLEANUP

Hard at work

It was heartening to arrive at School after the earthquake to a crowd of students , ex-students, members of the Spreydon Youth Community and a number of families shifting the silt that had covered the fields at Hillmorton High School.

Hillmorton has been very fortunate to receive no serious structural damage and the removal of silt has meant that the playing fields will be able to be used. The removal of silt halted for lunch and for the observation of the national two minutes silence.

“ It was really moving “ said Andrea Kendrew, Hillmorton High’s Sports Co-ordinator. “ We all were in a circle with student led karakia and prayer taking place before the two minutes silence”

Our huge thanks to all who helped on this day ! Your efforts are really appreciated !

NEW YEAR´S HONOURS for PE STAFF

CONGRATULATIONS to MELISSA RUSCOE and HAIDEE TIFFEN, staff members who were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sport.

PRESS article, 31 December entitled: "Duo accept gongs 'for the team' "

"Hillmorton High School teachers Melissa Ruscoe and Haidee Tiffen should be able to trump any students' stories about what they did in the holidays. The physical education department duo was named today as Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sport. Ruscoe, who captained the Black Ferns to the women's Rugby World Cup title this year, has taught at Hillmorton for 11 years. Tiffen, who retired from international cricket after captaining the White Ferns to the 2009 World Cup final, joined her in 2007. The pair see their awards as a personal honour but also welcome recognition for women's rugby and cricket, respectively. But they are also happy for Hillmorton to share some reflected glory. "
