Lonely Planet has labelled earthquake-ravaged Christchurch as one of New Zealand's most exciting cities.

In an online article published yesterday by the renowned travel guide firm, author Brett Atkinson said researchers had visited three times since the February 22 quake, including two weeks on-the-ground research recently, and were impressed by what they saw.

"Our latest visit was unlike any other Lonely Planet research gig, with virtually all of the bars, cafes and restaurants recommended in our 2010 New Zealand guidebook no longer open," Atkinson wrote.

"But amid the occasional uncertainty of aftershocks, Christchurch is re-emerging as one of NZ’s most exciting cities.

"If you're heading to the South Island of New Zealand, definitely spend a few days in the city. There's still plenty to do, and you'll be supporting the new businesses inspiring Christchurch's renaissance.''

The article highlights the suburbs of Addington and Sydenham - an area dubbed "SoMo''.

"SoMo, the area 'South of Moorhouse Ave', is Christchurch's most dynamic neighbourhood,'' Atkinson said.
"Addington is also the city's new hub for live entertainment.''
He said researchers were impressed by the city's innovative use of shipping containers, citing the ''colourful labyrinth'' of the City Mall Re:Start development as a place to visit, as well as container bars Cargo and Revival.
''Who knew there were so many uses for a shipping container? While the city's rebuild is carefully planned, the humble container has emerged as a funky option to kick-start Christchurch’s retail and hospitality sectors."

Among the attractions the article recommends are local favourites the Court Theatre and Dux Live, both of which were reborn in new locations after severe damage to their Arts Centre sites.

The Christchurch Farmers' Market at Riccarton House and Gap Filler projects also get a worthy mention, as do Lyttelton's farmers' market and petanque club.
While most of Christchurch's heritage still lay beneath rubble, Atkinson said, the city's "traditional English ambience is still in evidence''.
''Local students punt visitors languidly along the slow-moving Avon River, and the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park remain some of NZ's most impressive public spaces.''
