Choosing Your Course

The New Zealand Curriculum specifies eight learning areas:
English, Mathematics and Statistics, Science, Social Sciences, Learning Languages, The Arts, and Technology. These areas describe the knowledge and understanding needed by all students in New Zealand. At Hillmorton High School, we provide a broad and balanced education, covering all of these eight Learning Areas in the compulsory subjects you must study and in the option subjects that you choose. 

Compulsory Subjects in Year 10 
English, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, Physical Education and Health Education. 

Option Subjects in Year 10 
In addition to these core subjects, you need to choose THREE option subjects. In Year 10, these options are full year courses.   Art (Toi Ataata), Music (Toi Puoro),Dance (Toi Kanikani), Drama (Toi Whakaari), ESOL, Japanese, Spanish ,Te Reo Maori, Enterprise Studies, Graphics, Information and Communication Technology, Technology: Wood or Metal Technology: Soft Materials, Home Economics
