Arts and Cultural Groups
The Arts are extremely well served. Students are able to select from a wide range of activities in Art, Music, Dance, Drama and Cultural Groups.
Music - There are extension opportunities offered on a regular basis with visiting performers and teachers, and instrumental and vocal tuition is available from well qualified visiting teachers under the Itinerant Music Scheme.
Tuition is available in:

- Clarinet & Saxophone
- Guitar
- Keyboard
- Brass
- Bass Guitar
This tuition is free of charge and there are a limited number of instruments available for hire.

There are opportunities to be involved in choir, jazz ensembles (Junior/Senior), several chamber groups and bands. Each year the South West Music Festival, involving our contributing schools, is held here at the school. Many of our students participate in national and local music events such as Smokefree Rockquest, Christchurch Secondary Schools Orchestral Festival and the Big Sing.
Dance
As well as being able to be studied as part of ones course, is able to be taken as an extra curricular activity with an active Dance Club and numerous performing opportunities.
Stage Challenge
Large numbers of students have annually involved themselves in Stage Challenge, enjoying much success.
Drama Drama has always enjoyed a strong and visible presence at Hillmorton with many former students subsequently going on to enjoy success at Hagley Theatre Company and Toi Whakaari. Many opportunities are available at all levels and Theatresports is also an area where students have enjoyed being involved.
Cultural Groups
Hillmorton offers students opportunities to be involved in Kapahaka and a Pasifika Cultural Group. Our Kapahaka group are often called upon to perform at city events and enjoy a reputation of being fine performers. The major focus of our Pasifika Cultural Group is their performance at the Christchurch week long ‘PolyFest’, held at the end of Term 1. Our students again are fast developing a reputation for being outstanding performers at this event and others.
Service & Recognition Students at Hillmorton have service and leadership opportunities as part of: Senior Council Bully Busters Junior Council Peer Support Leaders House Leaders House Committees Sports Committee Library Individuals at any level who experience achievement in Sport, the Arts or in Cultural Groups are able to be recognized at Prize Givings with Colours Awards. Colours can also be gained for service and leadership in Sport, and in Arts and Culture.
